Greener Harborough, Greener Planet

Sustainable Harborough Community has been at the forefront of the environmental movement in Market Harborough and Harborough District since 2007. Originally known as Transition Town Market Harborough, we became the 22nd town to join the national and international Transition Town movement.

We are a collaboration of communities and individuals coming together to reimagine and rebuild our world, caring for one another, our community and our planet. We are focussed on developing the ideas, dreams, partnerships and projects which will enable this to happen.

Embracing the three tenets of the Transition Town Movement - Head, Heart, Hands - We aim to bring together reliable information and compassionate people to form active teams who can effect real positive change on the environmental, economic and social health of the Harborough District.

We are committee led and welcome people of hope and action.

Our History and Our Future

Sustainable Harborough Community (then known as Transition Harborough) were instrumental in winning a Lottery Bid to set up the Sustainable Harborough Project, which ran for 5 years in the Town. With its full time staff and town office, it was able to work with Volunteers, Businesses and Local Councils. For example, the project established Harborough Energy, EdibLE16 – a  local food initiative, and Taste Harborough. Sustainable Harborough also supported the formation of Eco Church Harborough, encouraging churches to go green.

The funded project came to an end in December 2017 and the fruits of that project continue to thrive; but the need for this work has not gone away and is now more important than ever.

In 2020 we relaunched ourselves as Sustainable Harborough Community. The devastating pandemic may have slowed and altered our progress but it hasn't stymied our enthusiasm. Our vision is to work together with the many environmental and sustainable groups and projects that now exist across Harborough District. Our aim is to form a network, supporting groups and individuals, maintaining a local ‘green voice’ and encouraging new ideas and projects where we see gaps and opportunities. We aim to foster good working relationships with our local Councils, Councillors and MP, and to run a Forum with them to highlight and publicise local issues and activities.

Sustainable Harborough Community is well organised, independent, democratic, with a Constitution, elected Officers, insurance and holds regular meetings and events. Membership is open for individuals over 18 years of age or via our schemes for young people. Affiliate your Green Group with Sustainable Harborough Community so that we can support one another. Spread the word so that we can involve more and more local people, organisations and businesses. Get your group and events listed in our free Harborough Green Directory.

We are people of hope, dedicated to building a better world. So come and get involved or just find out what is going on locally. You may well be surprised and inspired!
